About the Artist

Crystal Harling
With Her Paintbrush Dancing Through the Trees
I started painting Truckee landscapes over 20 years ago. I am a fifth generation Californian with roots in Sierra Valley.
My favorite areas include aspens in spring and autumn and the DonnerSummit. Every year I have painted the same grove of trees as they change seasons. I start with a plein air painting and that usually leads to larger paintings in the studio. I once painted a juniper tree over looking Donner Lake and found out later a English artist had painted the same tree over a hundred years before. I found my inspiration has always been Truckee and the Sierra Nevada. I also enjoyed painting numerous barns in Northern California, many that no longer exist.
I began painting by taking workshops with instuctors in the bay area including Carloyn Meyer, Randall Sexton and Ken Auster.
I also attended workshops in Tahoe with Phyllis Shafer and Gregory Kondos.
My paintings are now in house111 in Graeagle Calfiorna. Previously they were in High Camp Home, a leading interior design and retail firm in Truckee for almost two decades. I was also in Vrooman Gallery and the Gold Rush Gallery, in Graeagle, California.
The artists that have inspired my style
are Emily Carr, the Group of Seven, Tom Thomson, Maynard Dixon and Phyllis Shafer
